How to Get Google Assistant on Android Lollipop

Google Assistant is no doubt the best voice assistant currently available. It has a number of advantages. It brings a great smartness to your device. Google launched its voice assistant in Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Android Lollipop, the previous version of Android Marshmallow, doesn’t have Google Assistant. Android Lollipop covers a third of the market so here we are going to explain all the possible methods for installing Google Assistant on Android Lollipop. Follow the steps enlisted below.

Methods for installing Google Assistant on Android Lollipop

Method 1:

  1. First of all, go to Settings > Security. Here, make sure that you have enabled “Unknown sources” for installation of apps. After that, download Google Assistant APK.
  2. Open the downloaded APK file and install Google Assistant app.
  3. Once installation is completed, launch the app. Go to “Your Stuff” and then tap on “Add Reminder“. Do not skip this step.
  4. As, Android Lollipop has Google Now, so to make Google Assistant your default voice assistant you have to make it your default voice input method. For that, go to “Settings” and then tap on “Language & input > Voice input“. Here, choose “Enhanced Google Services“.
  5. Now its time to use Google Assistant on Android Lollipop. Press and hold the Home button for some time and then select the Google Assistant as your default program.

This method is very easy and should work for almost all the Android devices but still if you are facing any issue after following this method then you can go for second method.

Method 2:

  1. Open “Activity Launcher“.
  2. Navigate to the “Recent activities” and tap on it and then tap on “All activities“. It will take some time to load all activities.
  3. You’ll see a list of all the activities. Navigate to the “Google App“. Tap on Google App to expand it.
  4. Scroll down until you find “com.google.android.apps.gsa.staticplugins.opa.hq.OpaHqActivity”. Now you have two options, either you can create its shortcut on a launcher or just tap on it once.
  5. A new window will open. Go to “Your Stuff” tan and tap on “Add Reminder“. This step is mandatory.
  6. After this, Google Assistant setup will start. You can always skip this tutorial. Now, just say “OK Google” and start enjoying Google Assistant on Android Lollipop.

Method 3:

  1. Install Nova Launcher. Its a free app available on Google Play Store.
  2. After that, download Google Assistant APK as we did in first method.
  3. Now, press and hold for few seconds on an empty spot on the Home Screen in order to open the widgets panel. After that tap on “widgets“.
  4. Under “Nova Launcher” long press on “Activities” to drag it to the Home Screen.
  5. Navigate to “Google App” and tap on it to expand it.
  6. Find “com.google.android.apps.gsa.staticplugins.opa.hq.OpaHqActivity” and select it.
  7. This action will add a new icon of “Google Assistant” on Home Screen. Tap this icon.
  8. A new window will open. Go to “Your Stuff” tan and tap on “Add Reminder“. This step is mandatory.
  9. After this, Google Assistant setup will start. You can always skip this tutorial. Now, just say “OK Google” and start enjoying Google Assistant on Android Lollipop.

In case you Google Assistant doesn’t respond through Home button then use the shortcut icon that you added on Home screen.
